3/25 Strongsville won 13-3 1-0

The 2023 varsity baseball schedule opened on Saturday, 3/25 as the Comets faced off against the Strongsville Mustangs, in what turned out to be a windy, but sunny day on the baseball diamond @ Kremcheck Stadium. Mason scored early and often as they routed the Mustangs with a 13-3 run rule victory in 6 innings.

Bryce Brannon (junior) toed the rubber on Saturday afternoon for the Comets and kept the Mustang offense at bay for the majority of the game, in which he allowed one run on two hits and struck out 6 batters in only 4 innings of work.  Brannon notched his first career varsity win (1-0).  Ben Hanley (freshman) and Andrew Visconti (sophomore) got their first career appearances as they closed out the remaining two innings.

The Comets offense jumped into gear as they plated 4 runs in the first two innings to get the wheels rolling.  The fourth inning is when the Comets did their damage, as they blew the game open and scratched across 6 runs.  Mason finished the 5th and 6th innings by plating another 3 runs and ending the game after 6 innings by run rule.  The offense was led in large part by Sean Krueckeberg (senior) who was responsible for 3 RBI on 2 singles, Drew Cox (senior) with a triple and 2 RBI, Jake Hanley (junior) had 2 RBI on 3 singles, and Mark Rutherford (junior) who racked up 2 RBI on a double to the Left Center gap.  Nick Stroud (senior) also had a double down the left field line and Michael Murphy (senior) and Alex Koelling (junior) round out the stat sheet with 1 RBI each. 3/27 East won 10-0 2-0 1-0

The Mason Comets hosted the Lakota East Thunderhawks March 27th on a breezy Monday afternoon to kick off GMC Conference play.  What started as a pitchers duel quickly turned into a one-sided offensive explosion, as the Comets defeated the Thunderhawks 10-0 en route to a 5 inning run rule.

Jake Hanley (JR) got the start for Mason, dealing a one hit shutout through four innings, striking out 7 batters and picked up his first career varsity win as a Comet.  Quinten Kaylor (SR) made a one inning appearance and promptly got a smoothly-turned 5-4-3 double play from a sliding Mark Rutherford to thwart any comeback attempt from the Thunderhawks.

The Comets offense came alive in the bottom of the third inning, started by centerfielder Casey Doner (JR).  Followed by two singles by Drew Cox (SR) and Jake Hanley.  With the bases loaded, Michael Murphy (SR) got the Comets on the board with a single up the middle, which scored both Doner and Cox.  Anthony Sulek (JR) struck for a two-out single that scored Jake Hanley.  The Comets executed a perfect 1st and 3rd to score the fourth run of the inning.

After a quick 1-2-3 from Jake Hanley, Mason’s offense doubled their runs thanks in large part to a 3 run, opposite field Homerun from Michael Murphy.  Adding an additional two runs in the bottom of the 5th inning sealed the run-rule for Mason, as the Comets extended their record to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the G.M.C.

3/29 @ East won 10-0 3-0 2-0

The Mason Comets traveled to Lakota East High School on Wednesday afternoon for Game 2 against the Thunderhawks.  Much like game one between the GMC rivals, the pitchers were matched in a duel, that led to two quick and scoreless innings.  Mason started the scoring with a run in each of the 3rd and 4th innings and ended the game with a monstrous 8 run 5th inning, as the Comets defeated the Thunderhawks 10-0 en route to a 5-inning run rule.

Michael Bilo (JR) got the start for the Comets, going 3 2/3 innings and picking up the victory.  Sean Krueckeberg (SR) relieved Bilo in the bottom of the 3rd inning, with the game still close, to record his first save of the season.

Anthony Sulek (JR) got the scoring started with a single to LF to score Sean Krueckeberg and the Comets never looked back from there, as Michael Murphy (SR) added to the scoreboard with an RBI single to Left Center to score Nick Stroud.  Sulek began the big 5th inning with a lead off triple that sparked the Comets’ offense.  Mark Rutherford (JR) followed with a double to center, Nick Stroud (SR) singled in a run, Drew Cox (SR) singled in a run, Jake Hanley (JR) tripled in another run and the Comets continued to swing the sticks to add 3 more runs.

Sean Krueckeberg took the mound in the bottom of the 5th and slammed the door to seal the 10-0 victory for the Comets.  Mason moves to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Greater Miami Conference.

The Comets will travel to Hamilton on Friday to take on the Big Blue in game 1 of the series.

3/31 Hamilton (rain out)
4/1 St. Ignatius lost 16-5 3-1 2-0

Poor weather led to the cancelation of the Mason vs Hamilton matchup on Friday.  The poor weather also happened to carry over to Saturday’s match-up between the Mason Comets and the St. Ignatius Wildcats out of Cleveland.  With wind gusts reaching 30+ mph, offense and runs were at a premium early on for both teams, but the Wildcats outscored the Comets 16-5 en route to a 5-inning run rule.

After trailing 1-0 after the top of the 1st, the Comets got their offense rolling as Drew Cox (SR) lead off with a Homerun to RC.  The Wildcats would struggle with the leather, fielding 3 errors and allowing the Comets to take a 4-1 lead after one inning.

The Wildcats would take over the game from this point forward, scoring 4 runs in the 2nd, 7 runs in the 3rd and 4 more runs in the 4th.  The only remaining bright spot for the Comets offense came off the bat of Michael Murphy who tagged a no-doubt Homerun over the RC field fence.

The 5th would be a scoreless inning as the Wildcats shut the door on the Comets and leave town with a 16-5 run rule victory over Mason.  The Comets will look to shake off this early season loss as they travel to Hamilton on Monday for a GMC Matchup in game one of the series.

Next up, Mason (3-1, 2-0) will visit Hamilton TODAY, Monday, April 3rd. The Comets will return the favor and host Big Blue on Tuesday.

4/3 @ Hamilton won 15-0 4-1 3-0

The Mason Comets traveled to Hamilton High School on Monday to open up Game 1 of the GMC Series against the Big Blue.   Mason tallied the runs on the scoreboard early as the Comets routed the Hamilton Big Blue 15-0 in 5 innings.

The Comet offense caught fire early scoring 4 runs in the top of the first inning.  Michael Murphy hit a towering 2-run bomb to Left Field to kick the door open for the Comets.  Sean Krueckeberg and Alex Koelling both reached base to set up a Nick Stroud 2 RBI single.  The Comets continued the add on in the top of the 2nd inning with 9 more runs.  Drew Cox, Jake Hanley, Michael Murphy, Sean Krueckeberg and Alex Koelling led off the top of the 2nd with 5 consecutive singles.  Anthony Sulek would shoot a Sacrifice Fly to Left Center Field that added another run.  Stroud, Casey Doner and Drew Cox would load up the bases for a Jake Hanley single that continued to pile up the runs for the Comets. With all the action in the first two innings, the story of the day came from Michael Murphy.  Murphy who hit a first inning Homerun, a second inning single, and a second inning triple, finished the game off with a 4th inning double, which completed the Cycle.

Jake Hanley got the start for the Comets today, going 2 innings.  Hanley recorded 3 strikeouts without giving up a hit.  Quinten Kaylor, Austin Witterstaetter and Caden Campbell would each throw a scoreless inning to close out the game and seal a 15-0 victory for the Comets in 5 innings.

4/4 Hamilton (make up) won 13-2 5-1 4-0

Another game, another 1st inning offensive explosion for the Mason Comets, as they played host to the Hamilton Big Blue for the final game of the series between the GMC teams.   Mason’s offensive relentlessness continued in Tuesday night’s matchup as the Comets route the Big Blue in a 12-2, 5-inning run rule.

Michael Bilo got the start for the Comets.  Bilo pitched a complete game, striking out 5 batters and improving his record to 2-0 on the season.

The Comets got on the scoreboard quickly on Tuesday, with 5 runs scored.  The lineup remained disciplined at the plate tallying 5 walks, added with a Sacrifice Fly from Nick Stroud, Mason scored 5 early runs.  Drew Cox and Jake Hanley both had RBI Triples to extend the lead.  Mason would go on to defeat Hamilton 12 – 2.  The Comet offense continues to fire on all cylinders as their schedule continues with the Fairfield Indians.

Mason will travel to Fairfield on Wednesday to take on the Indians for game 1 of the series between the two GMC schools.  The first pitch is scheduled for 5 pm.  Inclement weather is expected late Wednesday afternoon, so be sure to check Mason Baseball’s Twitter page (@MasonHSBaseball) for the most up to date scheduling information.

Greater Miami Conference play continued Thursday as the Mason Comets hosted the Fairfield Indians for the right to 1st place in the GMC standings.  A pitchers’ duel turned into the Comets slowly taking over the game and finishing with a 6-1 victory over the Indians.

Jake Hanley toed the rubber for the Comets, dealing 4 shutout innings, striking out 5 hitters and notching his 3rdwin of the season.  Sean Krueckeberg and Quinten Kaylor both made appearances on the mound and closed the door on the Indians offense.

The Comet offense got started early with a leadoff double from Drew Cox, who would later score on a Jake Hanley groundout.  The offense would pick back up in the bottom of the 3rd inning, scoring three runs with two outs thanks to 3 consecutive hits from Michael Murphy, Sean Krueckeberg and Alex Koelling.  Anthony Sulek got a little help from the Fairfield defense as an error allowed Koelling to come around and score.  One run would be added in the fourth inning, and another in the fifth inning to round out the Comet offense with 6 total runs.

Mason will travel to Fairfield on Saturday for game 2 of the series.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.

Game 2 of the series with Fairfield was rescheduled for Saturday. Fairfield quickly jumped on the Comets early on, but the Comets continued to chip away until the flood gates opened as Mason rallied to a 14-4 victory.

After Fairfield’s 3 run bottom of the 1st inning, the Comet offense had some work to do.  Mason struck for one run in the top of the third after Nick Stroud came around to score on a Wild Pitch.  But that was not all for Mason as the Comets put up 6 runs in the top of the fourth with big hits from Jake Hanley and Michael Murphy.  After an Alex Koelling’s run in the top of the fifth, the Comets would add another 6 runs in the top of the seventh as Murphy, Koelling and Sulek each record 2 RBI’s in the inning.

4/10 West lost 2-0 7-2 6-1

The Lakota West Firebirds traveled to Mason on Monday to open game 1 of the series between the two GMC teams.  A pitching duel resulted in a total of 4 hits between the two teams as Lakota West comes out on top 2-0 over the Comets.

Michael Bilo took the mound for the start, giving up just three hits, one of which was a two-run homerun.  Sean Krueckeberg and Michael Murphy came in to pitch a hitless rest of the game.

The Comet offense struggled to get started, only recording one hit from infielder Anthony Sulek.  The Comets threatened to score in multiple innings, but the Firebirds distinguished any threat to seal the 2-0 victory.

Game 2 between the Comets (7-2, 6-1) and Firebirds will take place on Wednesday at Lakota West.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 pm!

4/12 @ West won 7-4 8-2 7-1

The Comets and the Firebirds squared off for game two of the GMC series on Wednesday, as Mason tried to split the season series.  The Comets jumped out to an early lead and extinguished a late push from the Firebirds as Mason slammed the door for a 7-4 victory over Lakota West.

Alex Koelling got the offense started with a lead-off triple in the top of the second inning and was promptly driven in by a one out double from Anthony Sulek to give the Comets a 1 run lead.  The offense continued to apply pressure as Jake Hanley came around to score thanks to an error from the Firebird defense.  Two more runs were added in the fourth inning as Drew Cox and Jake Hanley were driven in by a clutch, two out, off-the-wall double from Michael Murphy which extended the Comet lead to 4-0.  The offense was not finished yet, as Brad Hart scored on a pitchers balk and Sean Krueckeberg launched a RBI double deep to centerfield.  Sean would score on another two out hit from Alex Koelling.

Offense was not the only story of the day, as Jake Hanley took the mound for the start, dealing 5.1 IP, with 5 strikeouts and only one run given up.  Quinten Kaylor and Andrew Visconti both made appearances before Sean Krueckeberg came into close out the game and seal a 7-4 victory for the Mason Comets.

4/14 @ Oak Hills at UC won 5-1 9-2 8-1

The Mason Comets and Oak Hills Highlanders traveled to the University of Cincinnati for the Reds Future Showcase on Friday night, for a game under the lights and the opening of another tough GMC matchup.  With a late start, a lightning delay and a game played late into the night, the Comets departed from UC with a 5-1 victory.

The Comets offense got fired up early as they scored 2 quick runs in the top of the 1st inning thanks to a double from Jake Hanley and an RBI double from Sean Krueckeberg.  Sean would later score as he stole home in a perfectly run offensive play.

Play would come to an hour-long halt as lightning moved through the area.  But “lightning” would strike again in the Comet 5th inning thanks to a double from Jake Hanley that would plate Brad Hart and move Drew Cox into scoring position.  Sean Krueckeberg would dig into the box and launch a tiple into deep centerfield, scoring both Drew Cox and Jake Hanley, which extended the Comet lead to 5-1.  Sean would be thrown out at home trying to stretch his triple into an in the park homerun.

Bryce Brannon got the start under the lights for the Comets.  Brannon would only go 1 inning before the lightning delayed the game and shut Bryce down for the evening.  The Comets fought through the adversity on defense thanks in large part to Michael Murphy who pitched 3 perfect innings (9 batters faced, no hits, no walks and 5 strikeouts).  Michael Bilo would later come in and match Murphy, throwing 3 innings of no-hit baseball and close the door on the Highlander offense, who only managed 1 run on 3 hits.

Sean Krueckeberg and Jake Hanley would both be awarded with the Reds Future Showcase MVP. Mason would leave UC with a 5-1 victory and an opportunity so sweep Oak Hills on Monday.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 pm @ Mason.

4/17 Oak Hills won 4-2 10-2 9-1

Monday was a cold, overcast and windy day for a ballgame, but it did not stop the Comets from improving their 1st place GMC record.  The Comets did not play their best baseball of the season but fought through the conditions and a couple of defensive errors to beat the Highlanders 4-2.

After being relieved from the game on Friday due to an elongated lightning delay, Bryce Brannon got another opportunity to pitch against the Highlanders.  Bryce would deal 3 innings of no run baseball before being replaced by Quinten Kaylor, who pitched 2.2 innings, giving up two runs and getting a huge ground ball double play to end the Highlander threat.  Sean Krueckeberg would come in to close out the game and pick up his 3rd save of the season.

Mason’s offense was a little sluggish out of the gate but got things going in the 3rd inning and capitalized on a couple of defensive errors from the Highlanders.  Drew Stevens and Brad Hart would both reach base from an error and a bunt single.  Drew would be driven in by an RBI from Jake Hanley.  Michael Murphy was walked setting up a 1st and 3rd opportunity for Sean Krueckeberg, who delivered a line-drive missile into RF, which scored Brad Hart.  Nick Stroud would come up clutch with an RBI single up the middle to extend the Comet lead to 3-0 after three innings of play.

Oak Hills would scratch two runs across to bring the game within one run.  The Comets would respond with one run of their own as Alex Koelling would drive in a run with a single to right center field.

The Comets never looked back after increasing their lead.  Mason leaves the ballpark with another GMC sweep and a victory over the Highlanders, 4-2.  The Comets will host the Middletown Middies on Wednesday to open up another GMC series.

Monday’s victory is of special importance, as Head Coach Curt Bly notched his 200th career victory in his 10 seasons (9 played – 2020 Covid) at the helm of the Mason Comet Baseball Program.  Curt is as dedicated to his program as any coach in the state of Ohio.  A legacy coach who prides himself, not only instructing the intricacies of the game of baseball but setting his players up for success in life.  Congratulations Coach Bly on your 200th victory! #45040

After being down 1-0 in the first inning, the Comets would come in and immediately put up a crooked number.  Alex Koelling reached base due to an error on the second baseman, Michael Murphy would reach due to a dropped flyball by the right fielder and Sean Krueckeberg would reach by an infield single.  Bases would be loaded for Nick Stroud, as he drove in a run with a groundball to the third baseman, who would throw it away.  Mark Rutherford would then plate another run with a missile up the middle and the Comets ended the inning with a 2-1 advantage going forward.

Murphy and Krueckeberg would continue to deal from the mound and the Mason offense continued plating runs throughout the game.  Two more runs in the 3rd inning thanks to Krueckeberg and Stroud reaching base and a couple wild pitches that would lead to Krueckeberg scoring.  Stroud would later score on a perfectly run 1st and 3rd play.  One more run would come in the 5th as Krueckeberg would come around to score on a single from Nick Stroud that was misplayed by the centerfielder.
